Should your loved ones stay at home as they get older?
‘I want to stay in my own home’, is this something you have ever heard your loved one say?
At first glance, it might seem obvious that a care home or hospital would be the best place to look after someone, but there is evidence to show that this may not be the case. Small studies have suggested that admitting frail older people to a hospital can decline their physical ability. https://www.ndph.ox.ac.uk/longer-reads/hospital-or-2018hospital-at-home2019-2013-what2019s-best-for-older-people
At Red Button, our main goal is to empower people to live safe and happy independent lives with minimal change. We have three options available:
According to AARP – 90% of seniors want to stay in their own homes as they age. If they begin to need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care during retirement, most seniors (82 percent) would still prefer to stay in their homes.

There are several reasons for your loved ones to continue to live at home as they age (as long as it is safe for them to do so):
- Independence: This is a significant factor to consider. With the feeling of being independent comes happiness and overall positive mental health.
- Familiarity: Common sayings such as ‘home is where the heart is’ and ‘the comfort of your own home’ are very true. Remaining in their own home will help with consistency and familiarity, which reduces anxiety.
- Fear of the unknown: Nobody likes change. The fear of not knowing what’s coming will add a lot of stress to someone who is already feeling a bit more vulnerable as they get older. Moving from their own home could also cause loneliness and separation from friends and family around them.
- Support available: Nowadays, there is so much technology available to support the continuation of living at home. These technology devices, such as fall detectors and pendants, help to give both you as a carer and your loved one that extra peace of mind and reassurance.
- Physical exercise: Having a home to maintain and daily errands to do such as gardening and cooking can help retain levels of physical activity for those who are ageing. This is particularly important as physical activity helps with their overall health and wellbeing. We also produce endorphins whilst exercising, which give us positive feelings such as happiness.
