How To Eat Healthy As You Age

Over time, seniors may find it more challenging to cook and prepare meals, eat well and stay healthy, particularly if they live alone.

According to Age UK, It’s estimated that around one in ten people over the age of 65 are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition – that’s over one million older people in the UK today. Malnutrition means someone isn’t eating well enough to maintain their health and wellbeing.

At Red Button, we appreciate that it is so important to ensure that you or your loved one is eating well and maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, especially as they age. It is often thought that as we age and become less active, we do not need to consume as much. On the contrary, it is even more important that we maintain a healthy diet to retain muscle mass and stay strong and healthy.

Why do we eat less as we age?

There are many reasons why it is more common for the elderly to eat less. Some include:

  • Reduced mobility
  • Forgetfulness
  • They find it harder to cook for one person
  • Difficulty in food shopping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression
  • Loneliness

Tips for improving your eating habits as you age:

Below, we have outlined some tips to help encourage and provide confidence in cooking as you age, and unsurprisingly, telecare personal alarm systems can play a huge role!

If you or your loved one is struggling to eat or are not eating a healthy balanced meal, then there are some things we can all do to help:

Set reminders – If you struggle to remember to eat, setting reminders can help. This can either be with a physical alarm or by creating a new habit, such as eating breakfast while you watch the news at 10 am.

Invite your neighbours or friends – It is always tricky to food shop and cook for one person, often resulting in resistance to cooking and settling for what you have available in the cupboards. Instead, why not invite your friends or neighbours over to eat? You could alternate days with them if they also live alone. This will help spread the cost and make the experience much more enjoyable.

Change your routine – We can change our daily routines from time to time. Why not break down your 3 meals a day into 6, with healthy snacking in between? This can help spread the daunting task of cooking 3 large meals per day into bite-size chunks – literally!

Try some new recipes – Perhaps you are feeling bored with your usual meals, leading to a lack of motivation to cook. Trying some new recipes does not need to be a big task. There are so many quick healthy meal recipes online; if you are uncomfortable using the internet, your local bookstore will have a range of recipe books. Be inspired and enjoy cooking again.
