Stress Awareness Month - Taking the stress away from you and  your family with telecare.

Introduction

Stress Awareness Month takes place every year in April and is dedicated to raising awareness about the causes and cures of stress.

It is organised by the Stress Management Society. They state that the “primary aim of Stress Awareness Month is to:

  • Educate the public about the causes and effects of stress.
  • Promote effective stress management techniques to enhance mental health and well-being.
  • Encourage open conversations to reduce the stigma surrounding stress and mental health issues.
  • Provide resources and support to help individuals and organisations manage stress effectively.”

Every year, there is a new theme for Stress Awareness Month. This year’s theme is #leadwithlove. This theme encourages us to strive for kindness, compassion, and acceptance towards ourselves and others, regardless of difficulties.

Some examples of how this can be achieved are by extending kindness in our immediate surroundings, supporting communities worldwide, and nurturing our own well-being.

As the whole month of April is dedicated to raising awareness of the causes and treatments of stress, this article will focus particularly on the stresses that you or your family experience when they are worried about a loved one, as well as steps you can take to help manage and reduce the stress relating to elderly care solutions.

Are you worried about a loved one?

Feeling nervous or worried about your loved ones as they age is very common. You may experience growing concerns about their health, risk of falling, or safety, all of which can cause stress.

According to Age UK, around 6.1 million (74%) of adults aged 40-60 who think about caring for or supporting an older parent in the future say they would find it stressful.

In addition, of the adults aged 40-60 already caring for a parent, three-fifths / 2.0 million (60%) said they didn’t know how hard caring for or supporting their parents would be.

The reassuring part of all of this is that you are not alone, and there is plenty of support and help out there to help ease the worry and stress about the health and safety of your loved ones.

Are you worried about your health?

A recent Age UK report found that more than one in ten (13%) over 50s, equivalent to 3.3 million people overall, said they were worried about being able to afford care and support.

Almost a third (31%) of over 50s, equivalent to 8 million overall, said their health had got worse in the last 12 months, with three in five (59%) saying an existing health condition had got worse.

If you are experiencing any of the abovementioned, we understand that this can cause a lot of stress and anxiety about your future. It can cause a feeling of uncertainty and fear of the unknown.

There is Support and Help Available.

In both scenarios, there are things you can do to help reduce the stress and worries about the future. If you are worried about yourself or a loved one, there are many things you can do to help reduce stress and provide peace of mind and reassurance for everyone involved.

Here are our top tips to reduce the stress related to elderly care:

Join a support network: Many support networks are available throughout the UK for you and your loved ones to seek advice and guidance. Age UK, Mind, The Silver Line, Re-engage, and so many more, to name a few. These dedicated charities are there to help provide support for older people and their families no matter what the circumstances are.

Telecare packages: If you are worried about your health or the health of a loved one, telecare is a great way to provide peace of mind that you or your loved ones have access to help and support should they ever need it.

Personal care alarms such as a lifeline & pendant package, a fall detector package or a mobile watch (pictured) can help put your mind at ease and reduce stress.

Consider professional help: If there are any concerns about the health and safety of you or your loved ones, it is important to seek professional medical help and advice, starting with the GP.
