5 Tips on how to choose the right elderly alarm package

After you have had a conversation with your loved one about care solutions and it was decided that an elderly alarm package is the best option for everyone involved, it’s time to choose the right one.  Choosing the right elderly alarm package can seem like a daunting task. The package must have the features that you require. We have put together some things to consider during your decision-making process:
  1. What level of service is required
Make a list of all the features you would like the elderly alarm package to have and use this as a checklist against the product features. For example: do you need it to have 24/7 monitoring? Automatic fall detection or manual trigger button? Is the device wearable?  It’s crucial to ensure that your package will fit into your or your loved ones’ current lifestyle with minimal disruption.  We have developed a features guide to compare our 3 elderly alarm packages. Check it out.
  1. Distance
If you have a large home or like to spend a lot of time in the garden, check the distance range. It is also recommended to have a test call once a month to ensure you can hear the response team clearly. For example, our Red Button pendant allows users to raise an alert in and around the home and garden. It sends a radio signal to the Lifeline Unit when the button is pressed within 75 metres.
  1. Batteries / Waterproof
Ask the service providers how long the batteries will last. Do you need to charge it, and how do you know if the battery is running low?  Our Falls Detector device has a replaceable battery and auto-low battery reporting.  You might want to have your elderly alarm available in the bathroom, particularly in case of a fall when showering or in the bath. If you do, it’s essential to ensure the device is waterproof.  The accessories that we supply at Red Button Telecare are waterproof. However, if you prefer to remove them in the bathroom, put your pendant/falls detector at a low level so you can reach it if you fall or get stuck in the bath. The lifeline pendant/falls detector is waterproof in the shower or bath but should not be fully submerged under water.
  1. Ongoing support & maintenance
It’s vital to ensure that you have ongoing support from your service provider. Will you receive training on the device? What do you do if you think your device isn’t working?

At Red Button Telecare, we offer professional installation to our customers in eligible areas. This service includes comprehensive training  for you and your family members/carers. If you opt for self-install, your equipment will come pre-programmed with easy-to-follow instructions, and we have experienced engineers at the end of a phone if assistance is required to help talk you through the process.

If any of the equipment supplied to you as part of your service stops performing correctly, you can contact us, and we will attempt a remote resolution in the first instance. If a solution is not achieved, we will send replacement equipment directly to you.
