Simply put, the digital switchover is the UK’s transition from old-fashioned analogue phone lines to modern, internet-based technology. For decades, our calls have travelled over a network of traditional copper wires known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). However, this 150-year-old system has become outdated and increasingly expensive to maintain. To keep the country connected, providers are moving all landline services to a digital alternative, often called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or Digital Voice.

This change is a positive step toward a more reliable and smart future, but it does mean that any device currently plugged into a traditional wall socket, including older telecare units, will need a digital-ready update to keep working. If you are a Red Button customer, you have a couple of options.

  1. You can wait until you receive a switchover date from your phone service provider. Once you have received your switchover date, contact us as soon as possible. We can easily identify your account; we only need the service user’s name and postcode. Customers of other lifeline services (e.g., not Red Button Telecare) should contact their lifeline service provider.
