Bringing communities together through competitions

We recently ran an online nature photography competition on our social media channels, and we were completely blown away by not only the number of entries but also the level of photographic skill demonstrated in the photos we received.

In this article, we express our gratitude and appreciation to all those who participated and highlight some of the key photo entries. It was an absolute pleasure to unite people online through the love of photography, as well as bring them together in person at the hamper presentation. Here is the full story:

Our Judge:

When we decided to do a nature photography competition, we knew Red Button Team Member Carol was the best person to judge the entries.
Carol joined the army in 1976 at the age of 16, working with the Royal Signals. She was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve for a few years and the WRAC Association for several years.

In 2024, ten thousand veterans marched at the Cenotaph for Remembrance Sunday, and Carol was one of 89 WRAC (Women’s Royal Army Corps) veterans participating in the march.

Here is Carol in 1976 when she joined the army, and then again in 2024 on the day of the march.

In her spare time, Carol is an avid photographer. She is a member of several photography groups and has a keen eye for detail. We knew she was our judge!

The Entries

With almost 90 entries, Carol had a big task ahead of her. We even had to extend the announcement date by a few more days to give Carol more time to review all the entries and thoroughly consider the winners.

Not only did we receive entries, but we also got to enjoy hearing the stories behind the photos. Here are just a couple of them.

The Stories behind the Photos

Alan – Awarded an Honourable Mention in our competition.

“I used to do photography back in the 80s with a 35mm Yashica FXD quartz which I still have then digital came along and made photography to easy, but last year we were going on a trip back to the Falklands, first time in over 40 years so I got a Nicon camera and bought some different lenses I now take quite a lot of photos now which I thoroughly enjoyed. Again, thanks for the recognition.”

Red Button team member Iain took part (of course, he knew he couldn’t win), but he was enjoying all the entries and wanted to participate. He submitted a photo he had taken of this sheep in the Cotswolds near a place called Broadway.

The Winners

After long deliberation, Carol came to a decision, and on 30th May, we announced two winners and also gave an honourable mention to three other participants.

Hamper Presentation

On June 28th, Carol from the Red Button team presented hampers to the competition winners.

A big congratulations to Wendy and Nicola. It was a pleasure meeting both of you, and we hope you enjoy your hampers.

We also created certificates for the winners and those who received honourable mentions as a token of our appreciation for their participation.
